Nail e-files – how to choose a model for manicure and pedicure

Products: 10

A professional nail e-file is a basic tool for working on nails – it makes it easier to prepare the cuticles and nail folds, prepare the nail plate before a service, and remove gel, acrylic and gel polish. In the Julia Nessa range you will find e-files with power from 35 W to 65 W, with brushed and brushless handpieces, mains or rechargeable power and the Twist-Lock system for changing bits quickly. Each model differs in speed range, handpiece weight and power source, so choose one to suit your own rhythm of work. To complete the set, also pick e-file bits for nails suited to the stage of the nail set.

Nail e-files – how to choose a model for manicure and pedicure

A nail e-file makes it easier to prepare the cuticles, remove cuticle skin, prepare the natural nail plate before applying the base coat and take off what is left of the previous nail set during a manicure or pedicure. When choosing a model, look at the motor power, the speed range, the type of power supply and the way the bit is held in the handpiece. A well-chosen nail e-file should suit both the type of services you do and the place you work: a permanent studio or mobile services at your clients' homes.

The Julia Nessa range of nail e-files covers several brands: Activ Power, EXO and Saeyang Marathon. Each has different parameters and will work differently in the hands of a beginner and of an experienced nail stylist. Professionals working in a salon and those taking their first steps will both find a model that suits their needs.

Power and speed – from 35 W to a 65 W e-file

The motor power and the maximum number of revolutions decide which services an e-file for cuticles and nails is suited to. In our range you will find models with power from 35 W to 65 W:

  • Activ Power JD308 – 35 W rechargeable e-file, 0–30,000 RPM,
  • EXO EKO CX3 – maximum power 40 W, up to 30,000 RPM,
  • Saeyang Marathon K35 Cube and the compact K35 mini – handpiece power 45 W, up to 30,000 RPM,
  • Saeyang Marathon 3 Champion with the H200 handpiece – handpiece power 45 W, maximum 30,000 RPM,
  • EXO Silent SX7 – brushless, 48 W, range 0–35,000 RPM,
  • EXO Runner Up 65W – power 65 W, adjustment 5,000–35,000 RPM.

A higher range does not mean you have to work at maximum settings – you choose the speed to suit the type of bit, the material and the stage of the nail work, keeping your movements precise.

Twist-Lock handpiece and changing the cuticle bit

The EXO Runner Up and SX7 models, and Saeyang e-files with H200 and SH30N handpieces, have a Twist-Lock fitting, which lets you change the nail bit in one movement, with no extra keys. The brushless handpiece weighs 128 g, so it is lighter and more comfortable to guide around the cuticles and in hard-to-reach places near the nail fold. The light handpiece also makes for comfortable work over many hours. To keep the handpiece safe between treatments, take a look at our separate e-file holders.

Mains and rechargeable power – for home and professional use

Most e-files in our range run on mains power – the EXO EKO CX3 and the SX7 work at 220–240 V, and the Saeyang Marathon e-files at an input voltage of 110–240 V. These are professional devices for a permanent desk in a salon. If you want to work without a cable at home or when travelling to clients, choose the Activ Power JD308 – a rechargeable e-file with a 2200 mAh lithium-ion battery that takes about 2–3 hours to charge and gives you up to 12 hours of work.

Reverse and other features of nail e-files

Some models have extra features that make work more comfortable:

  • reverse rotation – available in the EXO Runner Up, the SX7 and the Marathon K35 mini, among others,
  • CLICK system in the EXO Runner Up, which signals that the dial is set correctly,
  • Soft Start, meaning the motor starts smoothly, without a sudden jump in power,
  • Safe system, which protects the motor against overload,
  • foot pedal in the set – lets you control the e-file from the panel without using your hands.

Diamond cuticle bits and carbide bits for removing gel polish and builder gel

For the e-file itself, it is worth choosing the right bits from the category of e-file bits for nails: diamond bits for working on the cuticles and nail folds, carbide bits for removing gel, acrylic and acrygel, and ceramic bits for taking off gel polish when you remove a gel polish manicure. Bits of different shapes suit different stages of work: one will help you remove cuticle skin around the nail fold, another suits natural nails, another artificial nails, and yet another polishing the nails at the end of the service.

Who an e-file for nails is for

A nail e-file is useful both in a studio-based salon and when you travel to clients. Mains-powered models, such as the EXO Runner Up or the Saeyang Marathon 3 Champion, suit a permanent desk, where higher power and stable work over many hours count. It is both a manicure e-file and a pedicure e-file – you get both in one device. For work travelling to clients, it is better to choose a compact or rechargeable model.

Compact e-files for mobile work

Saeyang Marathon K35 mini is a small e-file with a digital display, a good choice where saving space on your desk matters. Activ Power JD308 works without being plugged into a socket, so it is equally at home in a home studio and in the bag of a professional nail stylist who travels to clients.

Frequently asked questions

What power should a nail e-file have?

It depends on the range of services you do. In our range you will find models from 35 W (the rechargeable Activ Power JD308), through 40–48 W (the EXO EKO CX3, the SX7), up to the 65 W EXO Runner Up e-file for intensive work in a salon.

Mains or rechargeable e-file – which to choose?

You plug a mains model into a socket and work with no time limits, which people working at a permanent desk will appreciate. The rechargeable Activ Power JD308 with a 2200 mAh battery suits work travelling to clients – it takes about 2–3 hours to charge and runs for up to 12 hours.

What is the Twist-Lock system in a nail e-file?

It is a mechanism for holding the bit in the handpiece that lets you change the bit in one movement, with no extra keys. You will find it in the H200 and SH30N handpieces and in the EXO Runner Up, among others.

Does a nail e-file have reverse rotation?

Yes, some models – the EXO Runner Up, the SX7 and the Marathon K35 mini – have a switch that changes the direction of the motor, which you set to suit the service you are doing.
