A nail file has a wide range of uses in a nail salon. Its main job is to prepare the nails for a nail set – levelling the nail plate and giving it the right shape. A nail file works equally well for a natural manicure, a gel polish manicure and a builder gel manicure.

What do the numbers on nail files mean?

Every nail file has a set grit. The numbers printed on the files are not random. The lower the number on the file, the coarser the grit. A nail file with 160 grit is perfect for removing the previous set and for removing cuticle skin that overlaps the nail plate. A higher number means a finer grit, so the 210 grit side of the file lets you shape the nail, buff the natural nail plate and also work on cuticle skin growing onto the nail.

How to file nails

The shape of a nail file matters during a manicure. The curved part lets you work precisely around the cuticles. Thanks to the rounded shape it is easier to reach places where, for example, cuticle skin overlaps the nail plate.

When filing to give the nail the shape you want, hold the nail file upright in relation to the nail plate. To level the nail plate, gently move the file up and down, or hold the file from the side – then the filing movement goes from the right to the left of the nail plate (and the file covers a very wide area).

Buffer blocks, on the other hand, help to level the plate of a natural nail or a nail extended with builder gel. Julia Nessa offers buffer blocks in 90/90 and 120/120 grit.

Remember that a nail file is disposable – you cannot use it for another client's nail set. These products cannot be disinfected – a nail file used during a manicure can be handed to the client so they can touch up their nails if needed.

Nail files are available in the julianessa.pl online shop in different quantities. Besides single pieces, you can buy them in packs of 25, 50 or 100. Buffer blocks are available in packs of 10 or 100 pcs.
