Nail Powders – Types and Effects

Nail Powders – Types and Effects

Products: 21

Nail powder from Julia Nessa is a fine powder that turns an ordinary manicure into a striking, mirror-like finish with a simple application. The range includes over a dozen shades – from the classic mirror effect to iridescent, multicoloured tones – plus Luminess Flakes in 7 colours, which look beautiful embedded in gel. You rub the powder onto a layer that has been cured under the lamp but is still tacky – below the product list we show step by step how to apply and rub in the powder and how to combine it with a top coat. Mermaid effect, mirror-like glass or a soft sheen – you can achieve each of these nail art effects with the same simple technique.

Nail Powders – Types and Effects

Powders differ in colour and in the character of the finish you get on the nail, so a design with powder always looks a little different:

  • Mirror effect – Mirror Powder (silver), Silver Chrome and Dark Chrome (metallic, chrome shine), Glossy Powder and Shimmer Powder – a smooth, strongly light-reflecting surface.
  • Iridescent shades – Peachy Powder, Silver Rose, Sunset Powder, Candy Powder and Violet Sky Powder – a surface that shimmers with an extra colour depending on the angle of the light, and some also have a pearly shine.
  • Holo colours and multicoloured powders – Juliicorn Powder, Fantasy Powder, Sky Powder and High Gloss Powder – a shiny finish that combines several colours, without the classic mirror look.
  • Luminess Flakes – multicoloured flakes in 7 shades, for gel polish and gel designs and for fantasy French.

Every powder comes with an applicator, and the product has its own separate pot that makes it easy to store at your nail desk.

How to Apply Nail Powder – Step by Step

The method is similar whatever colour you choose – first you apply and cure the top layer, and the nail plate must be dry and degreased:

  1. Apply the top layer and cure it in the lamp, e.g. 30 seconds in a 48W DUAL LED lamp – a 36W UV lamp will work too, although the curing time will be longer.
  2. Using the applicator or your finger, rub the powder into the still tacky, uncured surface.
  3. With mirror-effect shades, use a 120/120 grit buffer block to matte the side walls and the free edge of the nail, without touching the nail plate from above.
  4. Gently dust off the design with a brush, taking care not to remove the powder you have applied.
  5. Seal the effect with another layer and cure for the time given on the label.

The more thoroughly you spread the powder over the tacky surface, the stronger and more even the effect – the whole design then gets a consistent, uniform look. You can always collect any excess with a clean applicator and use it on the next nail.

Luminess Flakes – a Three-Dimensional Effect on the Nails

Luminess flakes are a great choice when you want a dimensional effect instead of a smooth mirror finish. Embedded in gel, they give a three-dimensional, shiny accent, and on a coloured gel polish they work much like a classic powder. The order of work: apply your chosen colour and cure, then apply the top layer and cure for 30 seconds, and as soon as you take your hand out of the lamp, apply the flakes with the applicator, and finally seal everything with another layer. The flakes come in 7 different shades, so they are easy to match to your base colour, and the finished design gets an effect that is hard to achieve with polish alone.

Top Coat for Rubbing In Powder

For working with nail powder, the clear Pure Shine 8 ml no-wipe works best – it does not change the colour of the design, and its slightly thick, self-levelling consistency makes it easier to spread the powder evenly over the whole surface. Is it a top with a sticky layer or a no-wipe? Pure Shine belongs to the second group – it does not leave a sticky (inhibition) layer, so after curing you do not need to wipe the nail plate before applying the powder – the gel polish manicure is ready for the next step as soon as you take your hand out of the lamp.

Mirror Nails and Holo – Who Nail Powders Are For

It is one of the simplest ways to liven up a manicure and a nail design – it needs no drawing skills or brush, yet it gives a spectacular, unique, mirror-like effect across the whole hand. It works equally well for nail stylists who are only starting out with nail art and for experienced ones looking for a quick way to create a standout design. You can create mirror nails across the whole nail plate, make a gradient fading from the cuticles, or decorate just selected fingers.

How Long Does Nail Powder Last and How Do You Remove It?

Properly sealed with a top layer, the thin powder coating on the nail lasts as long as the whole design – until the next appointment. You do not need a brush here: you get the whole effect with the applicator included in the set. Thorough dusting before the final layer is key: leftover powder that has not bonded weakens adhesion and can shorten the life of the effect. When you want to change the colour, you remove it like any other design and then prepare the nail plate for the next manicure as usual. Simply rub a new powder into a freshly cured layer to get a completely different finish. This way you can try different shades and effects without any risk to the natural nail.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do you apply nail powder onto?

Best onto a no-wipe top, i.e. one without a sticky (inhibition) layer, such as Pure Shine – its tacky layer makes it easier to create the design evenly, and the clear formula does not change the colour effect.

Is nail powder applied over the gel polish or over the top coat?

You apply and work the powder into the cured but still tacky layer on the design, not directly onto the gel polish colour. This makes it easier to change up the manicure without the risk of smudging the powder.

What is the difference between the mirror effect and multicoloured shades?

Powders with a mirror effect, such as Mirror Powder or Silver Chrome, give a smooth, strongly light-reflecting surface in one colour. Multicoloured shades, e.g. Juliicorn Powder or Fantasy Powder, combine several colours in one shiny coating.

What comes in a nail powder set?

The set contains the powder, a dedicated applicator and a separate pot that makes it easier to store the product between appointments.

Is nail powder suitable for beginners?

Yes. Nail powder is one of the easier nail art techniques – it does not require a precise hand or a fine brush, yet the design looks polished and professional. Just rub the product thoroughly into the tacky surface to get an even effect across the whole nail.
