If you’re curious about which e-file bits we offer and how to work with them, be sure to watch this episode.
A gel removal bit for beginners – what is the No.2 Cameleon?
The first weeks of working with an e-file are about learning the feel: how firmly to guide the bit, when to slow down and how to recognise the moment where the product ends and the natural nail plate begins. Cameleon was created with this stage in mind. It is designed for people who are only just starting to remove nail sets, and has a gentler blade that gives you more time to react. At the same time it is a fully fledged tungsten carbide bit that won’t end up in a drawer once you gain confidence. Learning to remove product calmly is the foundation of every nail stylist’s work.
- Shape: cylinder with a gentle head.
- Material: very high-quality tungsten carbide.
- Working life: long.
- Blade: gentler – more control over the product being removed.
- Use: gel, acrylic and gel polish.
- Blade orientation: suitable for right- and left-handed users.
- Who it’s for: people starting out with an e-file.
- Shank: 2.35 mm (3/32 inch) – fits all the most popular e-files.
Cylinder and gentler blade – control over product removal
The cylinder shape lets you guide the bit evenly over the surface of the nail, and the gentler blade removes product more calmly than sharper models. In practice, this means a small mistake in angle or pace doesn’t immediately lead to going too deep. For a beginner nail stylist that is a huge difference – you can focus on technique rather than on the fear of damaging the nail plate. More control over product removal also means more comfort for your client, who feels the treatment is running smoothly.
A carbide bit to start with – why tungsten carbide?
Tungsten carbide bits, also called carbide bits, are used to remove thicker layers of product. Cameleon combines the durability of this material with a gentler way of working, so it works equally well on extension gel, on acrylic and on a gel polish manicure. That way, by learning with one tool, you get to know how different products – gel or acrylic – behave and gradually build a confident hand. It is one of those bits for removing nail sets that stay in your kit even when you move on to everyday work in the salon.
How to remove product with the Cameleon bit – quick, safe removal step by step
- Fit a clean bit in the e-file chuck and check that it turns evenly, without vibration.
- Start at a low speed – increase it only once you feel confident in your movements.
- Guide the cylinder smoothly over the surface of the product, without pressing, and don’t hold it in one spot.
- Remove product in layers and check regularly how much is left.
- Slow down near the cuticles and the natural nail plate to reduce the risk of damage.
- Collect dust as you go – a Studio Air nail dust collector and a mask will help.
If you feel the bit is working too fast, reduce the speed instead of pressing harder. Well-chosen removal bits let you take off layers of product quickly and effectively, but when you are starting out, accuracy matters more than speed.
Ceramic bit or Cameleon – bits for removing gel polish and builder gel
Many people start by asking which bit to choose for gel polish alone. For polish, ceramic bits are recommended: the ceramic bit for removing gel polish with a red band has a fine grit and high resistance to heating, but it is not suitable for gel or acrygel. Cameleon is more versatile – you can remove gel polish, gel and acrylic with it. For thicker nail sets, tungsten carbide bits work best, and knowing the types of bits makes it easier to choose the ideal bit for a particular client.
Who the No.2 Cameleon is for, and when to reach for bits of a different shape
Cameleon is a good first gel removal bit for beginner nail stylists, course participants and people who start taking their first clients after a course. The blade orientation suits right- and left-handed users. Once you gain confidence and want to work faster, consider a sharper cone – the No.1 gel removal bit. For working on the underside of the nail, the No.3 fir tree bit comes in handy, and for infills of gel or acrygel – the Dual bit. For professional use only.
How to care for your bits from day one
Bits need proper care, and it’s worth building good habits from the start. After each client, clean the dust off the head, remove product residue from between the blades, and disinfect and sterilise the bit in line with your salon’s hygiene rules. Store it separately from used tools and protect it from falling – a damaged bit runs unevenly, which makes learning harder.
Like all Julia Nessa tools, the Cameleon bit stands up well to disinfection and sterilisation.
