Fir tree bit for gel removal or for shaping? What the No.3 is for
Above all, it is a bit for shaping the underside of the nail. The underside of an extension determines how the nail set looks in profile and whether it is comfortable for your client. The shape tapering towards the tip makes it easier to reach under the free edge and to even out the gel precisely in that spot. For an infill you usually don’t need to remove the whole nail set – the bit helps you work the product so that the new layer of gel blends smoothly with the previous one, and it’s also a good moment to correct the shape. On dual forms it will help you refine the shape and underside of the nail set where an even thickness and a clean line matter. Medium power is a compromise between pace and control: the tool works efficiently but doesn’t force you to rush.
How to work the nail with the No.3 bit step by step
- Fit a clean, disinfected bit securely in the e-file chuck.
- Set a moderate speed and match it to your experience – at medium power it’s easy to stay in control.
- When working on the underside, guide the bit smoothly along the free edge, without pressing.
- During an infill, work gradually and check the thickness of the product from the side and from underneath.
- Slow down near the nail fold and at the cuticles, and don’t touch the skin of the nail folds with the bit – a gentle movement reduces the risk of cuts and damage to the nail plate.
- A Studio Air nail dust collector will limit the dust from working the product.
Fir tree, cone or Dual – which tungsten carbide bit to choose?
Each shape has a different job. When you need to remove the whole nail set from the surface of the nail – gel, acrylic or a gel polish layer – reach for the cone, i.e. the No.1 gel removal bit. The join between gel or acrygel and the natural nail plate during an infill is cleaned precisely with the Dual bit. The No.3 comes into play when you need to work the underside of the extension precisely and give the nail set its final shape. Unlike diamond cuticle bits, it is made of tungsten carbide, because it works on product, not on skin.
Who is this bit for?
The bit will be useful to a nail stylist who regularly does gel infills and extensions and works on dual forms. The special blade orientation makes it comfortable for both right- and left-handed users. It is a tool for professional use – you’ll appreciate the long working life of the bit especially during intensive work in a salon where there is a lot of gel nail work and the time spent with each client matters. For professional use only.
Safe working, disinfection and storage
Safe work is not just about technique, but also hygiene. After each client, clean dust and product residue off the bit, then disinfect and sterilise it in line with the procedures in your studio. Like all Julia Nessa tools, the No.3 bit stands up well to disinfection and sterilisation. Store it separately from used tools and protect it from falling – a damaged blade runs unevenly, and when working the underside precision matters most.
What is the fir tree bit best for?
For shaping the underside of nails, gel infills and working on dual forms.
How powerful is the No.3 bit?
Medium. It’s a good choice when you want to work efficiently while keeping precision when shaping.
Can I remove gel polish with the No.3 bit?
The No.3 bit was designed for gel, not for gel polish alone. If your client wears only a gel polish manicure, reach for a ceramic gel polish bit – its fine grit lets you take polish off the natural nail plate more safely.
Is the No.3 bit suitable for left-handed users?
Yes. The special blade orientation makes the bit suitable for both right- and left-handed users.
How does the No.3 differ from the No.1 cone?
The No.1 cone is used to remove product from the whole surface of the nail plate, while the No.3 is for precise work on the product, especially on the underside and during infills.
Can the No.3 bit be sterilised?
Yes. Like all Julia Nessa tools, the bit stands up well to disinfection and sterilisation – after each client you can disinfect and sterilise it just like the other tools in your salon.
