Benefits of coloured bases – adhesion and durability of the nail set
A properly chosen base is an essential element of a gel polish manicure: the adhesion of the following layers and the durability of the whole nail set depend on it. A coloured gel polish base does one more thing – it evens out the colour of the nail plate before you apply the polish. Compared with a classic, clear base, light and pastel gel polishes look cleaner on it, and with minimalist nail sets you get the look of a well-groomed nail plate already at the base stage.
Start choosing a base by matching the coverage to the condition of the client’s nail plate. The high pigmentation of Porcelain Milky Pink is especially useful when the nails have clear imperfections or uneven colouring that a base with 30–40% coverage won’t hide. That way you improve the look of the nails without adding further layers of colour.
Applying Porcelain Milky Pink gel polish base step by step
- Degrease and dehydrate the nail plate with Nail Fresh.
- Once it has dried, apply SuperBond or a primer suited to the nail plate – e.g. SuperBond 10 ml.
- Rub the first layer of base into the nail.
- Use the second layer to build the apex and even out the natural curves of the nail.
- Cure the base: 30 seconds in a 48W DUAL LED lamp or 180 seconds in a 36W UV lamp.
Keep a small gap from the cuticles – the product shouldn’t touch the skin. With a highly opaque shade, check each nail against the light before curing: the self-levelling formula will even out small brush marks, but it’s best to remove any excess product by the nail folds straight away. Over the cured base apply your chosen gel polish and seal everything with a top coat – just like in any gel polish manicure. If you plan nail extensions, you can build the structure on the cured base with a gel, e.g. from the Tixy Cover line.
Types of gel polish bases – when to choose Naked bases and when Rubber Base?
In the Naked series the coverage increases gradually, so you can easily match the product to the nail plate:
- Naked Base 8 ml – milky pink, 30–40% pigmentation: a natural effect and partial camouflage.
- Naked Base Porcelain Pink – porcelain pink, 60% pigmentation: the happy medium.
- Naked Base Porcelain Milky Pink – 80% pigmentation: the strongest coverage among the bases with a stated value.
If flexibility matters most to you, reach for a rubber base from the Rubber Base line. Rubber Base Pink and Milky have 60–70% coverage and were created mainly for weak and brittle nails – the Milky version makes neons pop and makes pastels easier to apply, while Pink and Natural are a foundation for French manicure, baby boomer and nude nail sets. For clients who like a bit of sparkle, you can suggest bases with glitter. Choose Naked Base when you need medium hardness and controlled coverage in one formula.
Who is this gel polish base for?
Porcelain Milky Pink is for the nail stylist who wants to even out the colour of the nail plate and strengthen it with a build-up using a single product. It works for clients with weak, brittle nails, for nail plates with visible imperfections, and whenever you plan a light or pastel colour and need an even background. Strengthening the natural nail plate plus a porcelain shade is a duo you’ll appreciate especially on short, well-groomed nails. You can read more about how a base affects the look and durability of a manicure in the guide on gel polish bases.
